The main purpose of an applicant tracking system is to collect, organise and filter applicants for a role. These systems exist in a number of forms, however their purpose is is the same. These systems are based on algorithms which help surface CVs to hiring managers which meet specific criteria for a role. Why applicant tracking systems are used
With the simplicity of submitting a job application online also comes the increase in number of applicants - many of which may not be appropriate for the role. As such companies understood there was a need for a form of pre-screening of candidates in order to filter out the ones that are irrelevant or unsuitable for the role.
In larger organisations this is a vital tool in the recruitment process, as their ads will have a greater scope, alongside having a broader range of departments which may well be hiring for roles simultaneously.
However, a downside to an applicant tracking system being part of the recruitment process, is those candidates who are well suited to a particular role, however their CV doesn’t stand out to the applicant tracking system and can be cast aside, meaning that as well as having the skills to do the job, candidates need to be aware of what happens behind the scenes when applying for a role, in order to ensure the best possible chance of success.
As well as filtering out applicants, they also allow a business to store all applicants details in one central hub to review and revert back to should the role or responsibilities change, or new roles become available which suit candidates.
